Learning objectives
To apprehend the key moments to undestand the course of Europe between the 18th and 21st centuries To understand, reflecting the recent past, the trends and challenges facing Europe today. To connect the Contemporary History of Portugal with contextual aspects in a dimension of time and space in relation to Europe. To identify, to select and to gather information (bibliography, iconographic , written documents and others), using it with a critical sense.

Syllabus
1. The European contemporary - a global perspective 2 - The "Age of Revolutions" 2.1. - The Industrial Revolution 2.2 - The liberal revolutions and the socio-legal and political changes 3 - The transformation of European society in the 19th century. 3.1 - The increase in population and the "demographic transition". The "rural exodus" and the European immigration 3.2. - Urbanization in the industrialization period: expansion and urban transformations; city and suburbs; the progresses urbanism 3.3 - The social dynamics: the rise of the bourgeoisie and the growth of the working class 4 - The 20th century - continuities and ruptures in a changing Europe 4.1 - The 1st World War 4.2 - The Russian Revolution 4.3 - Portugal, the 1st Republic and Europe 4.4 - The crash of 1929 and the Great Depression 4.5 - The Estado Novo in Portugal and the relationship with Europe 4.6 - The 2nd World War 4.7 - Europe after 2nd World War 4.8 - Europe after 1992 - disruption or transition?

Teaching methodologies (including evalution)

Focused on spatio-temporal context of Contemporary European History, it will be possible to promote an appropriation of structured critical and reflective kowledge, about this theme. The classes will be interactive, with diversification of resources and strategies that can go from the theoretical exposition, the discussion and group work, integrating information research, analysis of historical sources and selected bibliography. With different weighting indexes, the evaluation is based on three distinct moments, namely, two written tests (45% + 45%) and an individual research work (10%)
